How to Reduce the Sugar Content of your Recipes

February 10, 2015 - By Nautilus Plus

Making healthier choices doesn’t prevent you from preparing your favourite recipes, and it doesn’t mean you are forbidden from eating sugar. Here are some tips to fit your favourite desserts into your new lifestyle.

Reduce the sugar content by half

The majority of recipes we prepare contain way too much sugar. If you use only three quarters or half of the quantity of sugar indicated in the recipe, the result will be just as delicious, and the sugar content will be more reasonable. Try it, you won’t even notice the difference!

Add berries

All too often, we forget that berries are an excellent natural sweetener for our smoothies, muffins, or other desserts. Use them any way you like: frozen, dried, pureed, or fresh.

Add spices to enhance the flavour

Another tip to reduce the sugar content of our recipes is to use the range of spices we have access to. We can use them to trick our taste buds, as we often associate certain spices to sweet foods. For example, you can add cinnamon to your homemade apple sauce.

On the other hand, be careful not to abuse artificial sweeteners (sugar substitutes). They can come handy sometimes, but they foster our love for sugar. While our body does not absorb the ingredients, our brain is tricked into thinking we are eating sugar, and it keeps seeking calorie-dense foods to compensate for the lack of energy it perceives!

So it’s best to use real sugar under all its forms. The secret is always moderation!

Bon appétit!
