One of the prerequisites to eating healthy is to be well-informed and conscientious, as our health depends largely on the choices we make at the grocery store. With a significant share of our budget dedicated to food, and the ever-growing inflation of food prices, we are all seeking ways to eat healthy while saving.
According to Statistics Canada, 12% of the annual budget of the average Québec household is dedicated to food. This is a significant amount, hence the importance of a proper quality/price ratio.
In Québec in 2016, the price of certain foods has dropped, while the price of some of the foods recommended to stay healthy has increased steeply, for example: fresh vegetables +4.6%, fresh fruit +4.3%, and fish +7.4%.
Price fluctuation has forced almost half of Québec households to change their eating habits. It has become necessary to spend more time hunting for special offers in flyers, as well as hunting for discounts in more than one supermarket.
Many strategies can help you save on food, and I suggest you read my article 15 Budget-friendly Health Tips. Nevertheless, a field trip to a supermarket with a nutritionist remains the best strategy.
Learning to recognize misleading nutritional claims, marketing techniques, and how to read nutritional labels will help you become an informed consumer and enable you to make smart choices to meet your needs. Your nutritionist will be able to adapt the field trip in such a way as to answer your specific questions.
Group trips to the supermarket with a nutritionist are open to all Nautilus Plus members and non-members in most Nautilus Plus centres throughout Nutrition Month. For more information, contact your Nautilus Plus centre.
Have a great Nutrition Month!
