This simple recipe, with its comforting flavors, is particularly easy to prepare in winter! Just throw everything in the blender and you’re ready to go. These chai spice energy balls are an ideal snack to prevent the notorious mid-afternoon “crash”, or to satisfy a sweet tooth at the end of a meal! I recommend two energy balls for a complete snack.
If necessary, you can substitute the type of nuts. I suggest walnuts, but almonds or cashews can work just as well!
Servings: 15 energy balls
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Maceration: 1 hour minimum (optional, depending on choice of dates)
Ingredients:
- 2 bags of chai tea (optional)
- 200g or 1 cup medjool or other dates, pitted
- 2/3 cup walnuts
- ¼ cup (60 ml) flax seeds, ground
- ½ cup (125 ml) oats
- 1 tsp (5 ml) cinnamon
- ½ tsp (2.5 ml) cardamom
- ½ tsp (2.5 ml) nutmeg
- ½ tsp (2.5 ml) ginger powder
- 1 pinch salt
Preparation
- Optional: This step is particularly recommended if you are not using medjool dates. Boil water and infuse two chai tea bags in a large cup or bowl. Use a large enough container and, after 10 minutes of infusion, remove the tea bags and add the dates. Leave to stand for at least 1 hour, and ideally 3 hours, to rehydrate them and allow them to absorb as much flavour as possible!
- Drain the dates and add all the ingredients to a blender. Pulse until lumpy but smooth.
- Shape into 15 energy balls using your hands.
- Refrigerate and enjoy!
These energy balls keep well in the fridge for up to 1 week.
