Barbecue 2.0

July 4, 2017 - By Nautilus Plus

In the fall of 2015, after scrutinizing more than 800 studies, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), reported that processed meats and red meats were carcinogenic to humans. The following chart clearly shows the results and, for more details, I invite you to read my article “Processed meats cause cancer”.

With this information in hand, it is clearer than ever that changes must be made to our meals on the grill. I am not suggesting that you start buying veggie imitations of meat, such as vegetarian burgers or sausages. Their long list of ingredients shows that these products are highly processed and they can easily be prepared in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Here are 3 types of « meatless » recipes for the grill

  1. Chickpea Burger

I have made this recipe countless times…I simply love it! If you dislike chickpeas, there are recipes online that substitute them with black beans, white beans or lentils! Don’t be afraid to try several of these recipes.

  1. Tofu Kebabs

In addition to being simple and delicious, these kebabs are much cheaper than any meat! A 454g block of tofu will set you back 3 dollars and will supply 75g of protein! For added taste, you can marinate your tofu and vegetables beforehand!

Try this recipe Honey Sesame Grilled Tofu or be inspired by it!

  1. Grilled Vegetable Salad

Grill your vegetables and incorporate them into your salads. For example, add a little olive oil and salt to the following veggies: Eggplant, zucchini, bell peper, mushroom and asparagus.

Add a source of protein to your salad, such as feta cheese, bocconcini, edamame, pine nuts, walnuts, etc. You can also add a carb by introducing some cooled whole wheat pasta, some quinoa or you can toast a slice of grain bread on the grill.

Stop asking « Where’s the beef? »

If you’re anything like me, your family gatherings often took place over a burger around the grill. Keep an open mind when it comes to healthy and delicious new recipes and let’s start a new tradition.  The vegetarian cookout!
