5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Sessions With Your Personal Trainer

March 26, 2013 - By Karine Larose, M.Sc.

When we decide to take charge and to be followed by a personal trainer, it’s because we want a custom plan and most of all, results! In order to benefit fully from their expertise and get the most out of your investment, here are some tips you should apply when consulting a kinesiologist or other qualified personal trainer.

1- Be clear about what you expect. Tell your personal trainer about the reasons that made you request his services, and in function of the objectives you have established, he will be able to tell you if it can be done, how much time will be necessary, and most of all, what efforts will be required to succeed. Together, you will be able to decide on the best plan to get there.

2- Take this opportunity to ask questions. You can even write them beforehand so that you don’t forget anything. This fitness expert is at your disposal for one hour at each session, so use that time to get information. Not only will you will get the answer to all these questions that have been on your mind for a long time, but they will also be adapted to your own physical condition.

3- Maximise the hour with your professional. His schedule can be very busy, so if you are 10 minutes late, you will not be able to get them back at the end of the session! By being 10 to 15 minutes early, you will have the time to change, fill your water bottle, and even start warming up. This way, you will be ready when the time comes!

4- Between sessions, write down everything, and I really mean everything about your sessions with your trainer. In addition to completing your workout log at each session (such as the weight used, speed on the treadmill, heart rate during effort), make sure to note also how you feel before and after training. All this information will help your trainer better adjust the intensity of your exercises and question which ones should be used, etc., in order to reach your objectives in a more effective way. Using software such as Total Coaching is an interesting option to summarize your training sessions and gather relevant information.

5- Consider supervised group training. This service allows you to see your trainer more often for a lower price. In addition, these extra group sessions will provide you with the opportunity to perform exercises that are different from the ones you usually do while benefiting from the advice of your trainer. Group effect will also contribute to increase your motivation level! It’s a good way to ensure a good follow-up between your personalized training sessions.

And you, how do you get maximum benefit from the expertise of your personal trainer?
