Statistics show that 50% of people who start an exercise program give-up within the first 6 months. So, how does one start on the right foot and put the odds in their favor to succeed? Here are 5 tips that can help with motivation and perseverance in reaching your objective.
Set specific goals
Before starting any exercise or fitness program, it’s important to set clear goals. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to increase your muscle mass? Do you want to improve your fitness level? Whatever your objective, it must be clear from the get-go. This will allow to then set program paremeters that will support its success. When setting goals, it is important to make them realistic and attainable. It is always best to set conservative goals. Keep in mind that results don’t happen by themselves, you’ll need to supply the patience and the discipline to make them happen.
Don’t work out alone
If you’re a beginner, it is strongly suggested to work with a personal trainer who will motivate you and establish a plan adapted to your needs. You will be more motivted to work out in his/her presence and you will be proud to share the results you’ve obtained with them. By having a workout partner, you will be less likely to skip a workout because someone is waiting for you. Another solution is joining a group exercise class. You will meet interesting individuals in a dynamic setting while staying active. There are many types of group exercise classes, each designed to fit one’s preferences and goals for physical fitness.
Schedule it
In the real world, each day can present a challenge that will prevent you from working out. You must plan ahead and set specific time slots that are dedicated to you workouts. Ideally, keeping the same schedule every week will help develop a routine.
Do what you like, like what you do
When given the choice, we will always choose to do something we like to do over something we have to do. Same goes for working out. It’s important to choose activities because we like to do them and not because we believe we have to do them. To keep the workouts interesting and stimulating, it is strongly suggested to regularly switch them up.
Congratulate yourself
Don’t forget to congratulate yourself every time you reach a goal. Reward yourself with something you enjoy. You’ve worked hard to get results, so your reward is well deserved!
